BAK Basel Economics AG (BAKBASEL) is a private and independent economic research institute based in Basel, Switzerland. Since 30 years BAKBASEL has been providing analyses, forecasts and consulting services on an empirical and quantitative level to clients all over Europe. The research focus lies primarily on macroeconomic as well as industry- and region-specific issues, from both a cyclical and structural perspective. Benchmarking studies particularly deal with international comparisons of location quality and economic policy issues. Methodologically, BAKBASEL's key competences are benchmarking, structural analysis and forecasting. Clients are governments, administrations, associations, foundations and companies. |

Research & Databases |

Comprehensive models, extensive databases and sets of indicators at the sectoral and regional level are the foundation on which BAKBASEL develops its analysis. On the basis of the database of the International Benchmarking Programme (IBP), established in 1998, strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and risks of the regions and sectors can be identified. Today, the International Benchmarking Database (IBD) comprises already more than 1500 regions, 45 NACE sectors and various indicators of economic performance and location factors. It allows explaining the current situation of a certain industry or region as a result of its historical development in detail. In addition, based on the Oxford Economics World Model, BAKBASEL provides a forecasting service for cities and regions in approximately 175 countries. |

Evidence-based consultancy |
|

Based on these empirical studies, BAKBASEL also provides consulting services and develops recommendations for economic policies. These are aimed at policy makers on various levels of government (national, regional, municipal) and the economic policy planners and stakeholders in governments, associations, chambers of commerce and economic development agencies. Policy recommendations focus for instance on how a region or industry can maintain and improve its international competitiveness. |

Target-group-oriented communication |
|
|
The communication of the scientific results in a public and media-effective way is a central element of the work of BAKBASEL Economics. Based on the survey results, BAKBASEL publishes extensive reports whose key arguments are pointed in executive summaries and press releases. To present the results to a broad public, PowerPoint presentations are created. If requested, BAKBASEL organizes conferences, drafts media releases and publishes data and studies in the most suitable way. |

Independent since 1980 |
|

BAK Basel Economics Ltd. was established in 1980 as a spin-off from Basel University. Since 1987 it is operating as a public limited company. BAKBASEL is directed by Prof. Dr. Urs Müller (Director & Chief Economist), Marc Bros de Puechredon (Acquisition & Communication), Martin Eichler (Senior Economist). The shares are held by the management as well as persons and institutions (Swiss cantons, local communities, trade associations, foundations and companies).
BAKBASEL achieved a turnover of about CHF 4.5 million in 2010 and currently employs 35 persons
