Sustainability has become a common and frequently used word. What does it mean in the context of regional economic development? What aspects are relevant to be considered? The morning programme gives a broad overview on many issues currently under consideration. Where are the biggest challenges and the issues we will have to cope with? An overview will also include issues such as demography and immigration. Andreas Knörzer will demonstrate what regions can learn about sustainability from asset managers. Dr Wagner will focus on the role of city governance for long term performance: How relevant are quality of life, openness and cross-cultural integration for future success of regions?

The afternoon programme discusses the role of different regions both on the global and the European level. New competitors especially from East Asia are looking for their part in the world economy thus urging us to find a new role for European regions. Recent research results on specific growth factors for different types of European regions help defining successful long term strategies. |

This year, the evening programme will be held at the Merian Park, part of one of the largest charitable foundations of Basel (since 1886). The Key Note Speech will be held by Prof. Michael Braungart. His CRADLE TO CRADLE (C2C) concept of eco-effectiveness presents a positive agenda based on maximizing the ability of industry to truly support the natural and human world around it. The successfully interdependent nature of biological systems suggests that achieving a sustainable system of consumption and production is not a matter of reducing the footprint of our activities on this planet, but transforming this footprint into a source of replenishment for those systems that depend on it. After the keynote speech, guided tours at the Bio Farm of Merian Park are offered (German and English language). The farm is also an educational project for the pupils in the region of Basel; roughly 600 students visit specific courses and tours at the farm each year.

The Friday morning session looks into the future. Dr. Steinmüller is an expert to foresee technological and societal trends, weak signals and wild cards which may become relevant over the next 20 years. The ecological dimension will be contributed by the founder of the "Ecological Footprint", Mathis Wackernagel. As tourism will be one of the sectors most affected by climate change and rising energy and transportation costs, Christian Hunziker, our tourism expert, will give youa closer look at the tourism industry. |
