ABOUT THE CONFERENCE |
|
|
The current crisis is a threat to our economic prosperity. This year, GDP will fall dramatically across Europe. And the next year will not yet bring relief. But what is much worse: the current crisis puts the long term perspectives at risk. The recession being the consequence of plunging demand, many politicians centre their concerns on demand side management. The medium term race will, however, be decided on the supply side.
It is this very crisis that holds opportunities for regions. The current recession and the substantial shifts in the economic structures and powers in the wake of the financial crisis offer a significant opportunity to regions: Focus on the regional advantages, develop new strengths and extend to new areas of activity. In the end regions can emerge from the current crisis in a stronger position than they have been in before. The cards are being reshuffled and regions moving fast and with dedication can gain a lot!
Which are the important factors for a region to exploit these opportunities? What are the region’s strengths? How can they be used best? The general facts are well known, but essential for a region’s success is the optimal mix of action and strength. Knowing its competitive advantages, structure and strengths, is absolutely crucial for a region.
A region must answer all these questions in order to compete successfully with other regions and to exploit the opportunities – to utilise the creative destruction in the sense of Schumpeter – opening just now in the wake of the crisis. The Forum supports cities and regions in achieving these goals and to move into the right starting position to emerge stronger from the crisis and to gain substantial and sustainable economic growth.
The best time for improving the supply side and shaping the potential of your regional economy is – now.
