Monitoring Life Sciences Locations
Strong growth, above-average productivity, job creation: the Life Sciences industry has clearly demonstrated its worldwide potential in recent years. But how has the performance of important Life Sciences locations in Western Europe and the USA exactly developed in recent years? How compares the industry’s performance internationally at present? And how are the most important framework conditions and location factors that affect Life Sciences performance doing?
BAK Basel Economics has undertaken the research project «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» investigating the framework conditions (in all relevant spheres of action – societal, economic and political sphere) and the evolution of Life Sciences locations. By linking information on the performance of a selection of the most important Life Sciences locations with indicators about (influenceable) policy areas, the research projects gives a differentiated analysis of the Life Sciences locations.

International Comparison of Life Sciences Locations
If one compares the importance of the industry as gauged by its share of value added in the economy as a whole and value added growth with other international regions, the result is unmistakable: no other Life Sciences region in the world comes anywhere near Basel in terms of the aspects shown in the figure above. Nowhere else is the Life Sciences industry as influential and important for the regional economy as in the trinational economic space of Basel. Regions like the Geneva Region, Zurich, Øresund, and New York seem to be on their way to catching up with metrobasel. One should keep in mind that while the Geneva Region and Zurich are still small Life Sciences locations, Øresund is increasing its size rapidly and New York is already bigger than metrobasel when looking at the number of employees.
