Current Results Life Sciences Report 2007/2008
The main focus of the analysis in the “Life Sciences Report 2007/2008” is 2000-2006. Within this time period the growth in real gross value added (GVA) in Life Sciences has outpaced the aggregate economy in most regions. Between 2000 and 2006, the highest growth rate of GVA in Life Sciences over all regions was seen in the Geneva Region (14%). When comparing the eight big Life Sciences locations which have more than 30’000 employees in Life Sciences (Boston, SF Bay Area, New York, New Jersey, Southern California, metrobasel, Milan, Paris), New York has the highest 2000-2006 growth rate in value added, but metrobasel follows in a close second place. Another interesting point is that many regions with enormous growth rates between 1995 and 2000 were not able to retain these growth rates in recent years.
The analysis of the framework conditions and locations factors in the 2000-2006 period basically confirmed the results from the former “Life Sciences Report 2005”: All of the continental European locations need to improve in the following areas: in the positioning of their healthcare policy, in the framework conditions that apply specifically to the Life Sciences, and in the general conditions that affect companies on the one hand and highly qualified employees on the other. For the Swiss locations it is most necessary to take action with respect to their universities, especially regarding their innovative capacity and their mass deficit in terms of quality and innovative power. The “Life Sciences Report 2007/2008” is only available for project partners; the Executive Summary is available upon demand (free of charge).

Future Results |
Goals for future versions of this report include broadening and deepening the analysis which would provide additional benefits. New indicators could be integrated. Fields that had to be left off in the first phase of the project, such as the role of the government and business development, could be addressed. The goals of universities could be deepened further. The performance data could be looked at more closely, improved and refined. Furthermore, it might be advantageous to further enlarge or redraft the geographical span of the regions, to include new competitors and to adapt the sample to shifting. |
